For the paper automaton, Sim and I decided to create this Leaping Goat together.
This is a very challenging paper automaton since itās double-sided and we need to stick two sides together before cutting the template into pieces. In order to have a better shape for the automaton, we decided to use a thicker paper (probably cardstock?) as the material. However, it turned out that we might just need one side of it to be the cardstock because it was too thick to fold at the end:(
After cutting all of the pieces from the template, we first used double-sided tape to stick them together. But the result was not ideal as they kept breaking apart. So we used hot glue instead. We also used tape to stabilize the crank. The finished Goat looks like this:
Since the theme of the poem that inspired me is āEverlasting Beautyā, I wanna use a music box shape to represent the idea. Butterflies will be the main visualization, as there will be multiple ones in a spiraled arrangement. When turning the crank, the butterflies will rotate and each butterfly will also be flapping their wings. On the surface of the gear, Iāll put debris of the cd disc (or probably just the whole disc) that can reflect rainbow colors in different directions, and hopefully it can also reflect some colorful lights onto the butterflies as well.
I tried to prototype the main gear system and this is what I have. When you turn the vertical gear, the horizontal one follows and rotate as well. I used the Gear Generator to calculate the gear ratio and cut them on cardboard.
