After Kai helped me build two models for the bevel gears, I started to use 3D printer to print out a small version for testing. The test models went very well, so I began to print them in actual sizes.
I cut the CD disc into pieces and tested its reflection under the light. The iridescent reflection is quite satisfying.
Then I used Fusion 360 to build the models of each component for my automaton, and then used 3D printer to print them out. The Model 1.0 worked well with each other, even with the dome. But I also ran into a problem: I cannot find a good approach to support the wheel and hold it in place.
Thank Josh for the suggestion that I can add three more pinions to hold the wheel in place, I finally solved the problem. I revised the model file and print out the Model 2.0. Now I have one wheel with four small pinions for my bevel gear system.
I started to make butterflies. After testing with a few materials, I decided to use wires to make the butterfly shape instead. I made four different kinds of butterflies, and each of them has movable wings.
In terms of the followers, I laser cut several cams and connected them with a thin dowel. I also drilled a tiny hole on the dowel so that the steel stick which supported the butterflies can fit into the hole and connect with the follower.
